How Soon Can I Eat After A Dental Filling?

Once your damaged tooth has been restored with a dental filling, you may feel excited to eat all the foods you couldn’t enjoy before. But before indulging in your favorite treats, you may wonder whether eating right away will damage your new filling. Let’s understand why and how long you need to wait after getting a dental filling before getting back to your normal diet.

What Happens During a Dental Filling Procedure?

Dental fillings are used to repair decayed, worn, or damaged teeth, most often due to cavities. At the start of the process, your dentist will numb the area using a local anesthetic, making sure that you don’t feel any discomfort during treatment. Once numb, the decayed part of the tooth is carefully removed, and the cavity is cleaned.

If your dentist is placing a composite filling, they will place the tooth-colored material on the prepared tooth surface and mold it to recreate the natural tooth shape. It is then hardened using a curing light. On the other hand, amalgam (silver) fillings require more shaping of the cavity for retention. In the final steps, the material is polished to smooth any rough edges.

When Can You Eat After a Dental Filling?

In most cases, you can enjoy your favorite foods soon afterwards. However, the wait period depends on the type of the filling material:

  • Composite fillings harden almost instantly with the help of a curing light. That means you can eat within a couple of hours after the procedure.
  • Amalgam fillings take longer to set. In most cases, dentists suggest waiting at least 24 hours before chewing on that side of your mouth or eating solid foods.

Regardless of the filling material used, it is a better option to start with soft, easy-to-chew foods. This gives your newly restored tooth more time to adjust and helps prevent discomfort.

For the first few days, and even as a part of long-term care, try avoiding hard, sticky, or chewy foods, like nuts, raw vegetables, or chewy candies. They can dislodge or crack the filling, exposing the inner sensitive layers of your tooth.

Can You Drink Coffee or Tea After a Filling?

For a few hours after the procedure, your teeth will likely remain numb due to the local anesthetic. During this time, it is best to avoid hot drinks like coffee or tea, as you may unintentionally burn your tongue, lips, or cheeks without being aware of it.

If you feel thirsty or want something to sip on, opt for cool beverages such as plain water, milk, smoothies, or fruit juice. Once the numbness completely wears off and you regain full sensation in your mouth, you can safely enjoy your favorite warm beverages again.
